TKD
The biggest thing i need to do to prepare for UCOpen is just drill the common tkd moves into me.
Of course, my biggest weakness is my tightness...i need to train my body to relax at all times. Even Master Ahn noticed this in me after just one set of drills.

Sparring class
Today i worked a lot with Ray. He scares me too. When i work with someone as quick and skilled as him, i really have to convince myself to keep my eyes open as i'm getting pummelled. This just goes back to basics, of always trying to keep myself balanced, and my elbows in a good position to defend myself. because at those times when i'm in tight and getting canned, closing my eyes in fear and giving up is the worst thing i can do.

Sunday 3/19 Groundwork

Remember that a lot of the standing techniques (throws, wrist defense, etc) are also applicable during groundwork
In the forward, offbalance takedown where you end up in the scarfold, you can do a variety of things to the arm that is trapped. if opponent is holding it, distract him by playing with his face

Throws
Step in more, to get under (or even past) partners CG

Tae Kwon Do basic sparring strategy
Opponent is at momentary disadvantage if he EVER steps with one leg at a time (to cross or side step). Use this!
Cut Kick -constantly jam opponent, when he starts to expect this and side steps it, ax/crescent kick. also good counter to back kick

Monday club -throws
Same concepts, drill drill drill! attendance for morning classes is getting lower..still at 5 people, so ok
PE classes -the 8-9 class throws very well. generally they are more attentative and into it (maybe the presence of TA's has helped their growth and confidence?). Both classes however are almost at the pace I want them to be at. They should be more than ready by the time the test comes around =)
Concepts covered: groundwork
1) stable base
2) get assymetrical when on bottom
3) get elbows and knees btwn you and partner

Club: Kicks
MW we did kicking drills and spin kick exercises. There comes a point where the only way to improve is to just drill and drill to get the muscles and brain pathways used to the same thing over and over. All the basic kicking moves are emphasized.
Spin kicks - it's important to rotate the front foot (and keep weight on the BALL of the foot). maintain balance, and keep arms in

Club: learned throws this week
PE students are doing great. They're able to throw each other now. Dr. Lee might have them do some ground work exercises. I'll need to start teaching them formal stances/blocks/strikes.
Now we finally get to work on FLAVOR!

Sunday Sparring class: Throwing
One arm shoulder throw - keep the arm tight, come in with shoulder, THEN turn back to opponent (makes for a tighter fit). We practiced this throw from different positions and with movement.

Another interesting takedown was a counter to someone who likes to grab your lapel. On the same side arm, reach under and grab the partners other side lapel. This will push his elbow in and you can use that weakness to reach down for his leg. Place your own leg behind his, and you can take him down. If opponent resists, you can get real low and do a forward throw.

Afternoon class: groundwork
Did an interesting drill where we basically played king of the mat - first to touch the floor outside of the mat loses. this really dinged me up good

Triangle choke - defense in guard
When person is trying to pass a leg, use that leg's kneepit, place on shoulder and use other leg to help grip. Pull partner's arm across (turns persons throat TOWARDS choke). To help, can angle your own body to the choking side.

Club - Groundwork
Reviewed basics...I need to read and review about positioning. The points i went over included applying weight to keep the person on the floor symmetrical, and to focus on their shoulders and hips.

I need to review figure 4 lock

PE class - the classes are learning an extensive amount or wrist and grab defenses. Next few days will review hip throw and maybe start 16 step.
