yesterday the class did some rolling and falling, as well as a little bit of kicking. lots of blocking. it weird to see new students practice blocking, since it looks so unatural and stiff. i dont know how to get them to relax. one friend told me once that she learned with the analogy that there was a booger on her hand and she had to flick it off. she said it seemed to work, so maybe i'll make them practice that way. we'll see how it works. another one of the students said she had a mental block rolling because she fell on the stairs as a kid and was having trouble rolling over her head and shoulders. i dont really know what advice to give other than to keep practicing and take it slow. any advice?

I'm going to try and write in this more consistently now. i'm TAing my own class now... it's pretty fun. right off the bat, i got them to start kihaping because of kenny's advice (more like his trouble trying to get them to kihap). they're been progressing pretty well. dr. ur taught them to backfall, and most seem comfortable... at the very least they're tucking their heads and kihaping. most seem to have trouble getting the timing right. for example, they'll slap before their shoulder blades touch, or they'll slap too late. dont really know how to fix this except to tell them to practice.

usually when they warm up, they do some kicks and run around a little... i wish i knew more fun warmups to do. if anyone thinks of something-- let me know! i was also thinking i'd try to get them to work on their muscle memory and form... their kicks can be pretty atrocious-- and some still can't tell the difference between side and roundhouse kicks. maybe i should ask my tkd buddies how they were taught the difference between the two.

during club workout on monday, we learned a defense in case you are in the turtle position and defending against someone who grabs inside your dobok around your head. if this happens, you can pin their elbow down, and hold it against your body. then you do a low shoot in the direction of the grabbing arm. its best to try and shoot out as close to their legs as possible, to keep the hold tight. eventually the attacker (grabbing person) will roll over themselves putting them in a vulnerable position (defender can move into scarfhold, or side mount, or armbar, or something equally hurtful) or their arm will be twisted off. sweet.

on wednesday the early class practiced wrist escape into an armbar into a comealong
