DOOOOD i'm posting again for any of you crazy old school hkd folk
TAing for Dr. Lee is interesting. He's a nice guy, but he doesn't really explain much technique; he just has the students do it from scratch.
So I try as much as I can to break down each movement; so far with two days with the students, I've reviewd footwork, back fall, side fall, front fall, and front push kick, which is kind of a lot in my opinion.
But on the positive side, the white belts will know many of the basics earlier than i previously expected, and so i won't have to go to so many classes.
My Goals: 1) Keep as many students as possible; i believe a lot of students drop out (or consider it) after the heavy pounding from all the falls; especially when they don't recieve proper instruction. I've tried my best to help their technique and to encourage them by letting them know that it only gets easier (for this semester at least)
2) Raise the overall quality of the white belts to the point where the other colored belts will feel pressured to do better. -i have high hopes for these classes as I've never had the chance to TA a class for a full semester. and now i have the opportunity to help out two classes. this goal is mostly a personal one and it's just fortunate for me that i have so many new bodies to manipulate. BWAHHAHAHAHAHA.
3) Hopefully, the gap btwn white belts in PE and Club will be reduced dramatically. With only 45 min in PE class, there's a little more than half the time than club members get to practice. If the black belts can't tell the difference btwn club and PE white belts at the end of the semester, I'll only be slightly disappointed. If my students can do BETTER than the club members, than i'll be content.
Things for me to think about: Make sure to emphasize 1) SAFETY and 2) to have FUN Kiyapping and spirit are always a must
Techniques: Kicks - raise knee, keep upper body straight Back fall - slap just before upper shoulder hits the ground, raise hands higher so they can come down and end with a 45 degree angle from the shoulder Side fall - review concepts of how to get down INTO the side fall
Next week: briefly review falls, teach roundhouse kick, and how to grab wrists
